Ohio State Highway Patrol Retirees' Association History

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has a long and storied history of professional service to the citizens of Ohio since its inception in 1933. The following photos and information is intended to honor and recognize our history by reflecting on the past. The active and retired members of the Patrol family recognize that the reputation and respect enjoyed by today's Patrol was built and nurtured by those who came before us.

As is the case with most law enforcement agencies, the Patrol has undergone many changes in the types of uniforms, vehicles, equipment and facilities over the years. In an effort to provide the most efficient and effective service to the public, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment has always been a priority.

Like the Patrol, the Retirees' Association has also grown and changed over the years.

Bus Inspection
School bus inspections have long been the responsibility of the Patrol, dating back to the 1930's.
Early Radio
In the 1950's, Radio Technicians utilized state of the art technology to communicate by radio with Troopers on the road.
Hartman Farms Training Academy
Before the current OSHP Training Academy was built in 1958, hundreds of Troopers were trained at the Hartman Farms academy on US Route 23 south of Columbus.
Tire Changing in 1955
Assisting motorists in need has long been foremost in Trooper's minds. Here, a Trooper assists a motorist in changing a flat tire in 1955.
